Employer Tuition Assistance

Another Way To Pay For College

With billions being spent annually, employer tuition assistance programs are no longer exclusive to big Fortune 500 companies. Many smaller companies are now recognizing the value of this form of employee benefit.

As the name suggests, an employer tuition assistance program is a provision made by employers to reimburse employees for cost associated with furthering their education. The program isn't always limited to employees wanting a college education but the costs for professional seminars and courses may also be included.

The details of the program varies from company to company. Some companies will pay 100% of the education costs upfront, whilst others will have the employees pay upfront and then only partially reimburse them.

Another possible requirement is that employees have to study a job-related course in order to qualify for assistance whilst some companies are a bit more liberal.

This type of financial assistance is not limited to a college education but employees wishing to take professional seminars, courses and workshops stand a good chance of receiving financial assistance.

If you are an employee, please be aware that this type of program isn't always openly advertised at your workplace. Therefore, it is best to check with your Human Resources Department to find out if they offer tuition assistance.

If there is no formal employee tuition assistance program, you can, in a professional manner, put forward your case for getting tuition assistance from your employer.

First, you can provide documentary evidence of your accomplishments at the company and argue how furthering your education would benefit the company even more. Then, you would need to have details of the school, tuition, course and length, ready to show your employer.

The important thing to remember is that there are other forms of college financial aid should you be unable to get tuition assistance from your employer.
